Association of Editors of Jesuit Publications

Strake Jesuit College Preparatory

Name & title: Rick Rivers, Director of Communications

Institution & publication: Strake Jesuit College Preparatory

Type of publication: magazine

Readership audience: alumni, parents, donors, faculty/staff, etc.

Number of pages: 24

Frequency of publication: quarterly

Circulation: 10,500

Color: 4-color

Basic style manual: AP Stylebook

Reason for using the manual: generally well accepted

Dictionary: Merriam-Webster

Reason for using dictionary: It was on my bookshelf when I started to work here.

Items on our house style sheet not covered in our manual: We are beginning to reference 'S.J.' as 'SJ'. Per Company magazine reasoning that 1) there was no official right or wrong way and 2) it looks cleaner and doesn't make it confusing when it ends a sentence.

Items on our house stylesheet that override our manual: Debating listing times as PM rather than as p.m. as AP Style Book calls for.

Unresolved issues: Trying to get people to stop referring to the school simply as Strake and officially being Strake, Jesuit, or Strake Jesuit.
Trying to stop references to 'scholarships' and instead use 'financial aid' or 'tuition assistance'. This is a UIL issue since we now compete against the public schools. rrivers@strakejesuit.org
